Can You Hear Me Now?

Today marked the always popular annual Defcon WiFi Shoot Out, where teams compete for the longest distance of shooting a WiFi signal. Last year’s winners – Team Pad – took it again, and did so by blasting their previous record of 55.1 miles with new record today of 125 miles. They left the goddamn state for christ’s sake! Their shot from just outside Las Vegas took them to a location near St. George, Utah.
Very cool, though something tells me that antenna of theirs isn’t exactly what one would call portable.
Now, let me get this straight. My telephone company, which is like a hundred years old, spends millions of dollars on R&D and employs thousands of highly trained engineers, cannot get a DSL signal to my house which is less than 2 miles from the CO, and yet a bunch of geeks who appear not yet old enough to have graduated from college can shoot a Wifi signal 125 miles. It baffles the mind.
