While this little fellow here is meant to provide important messages and reminders to yourself and others, I think it would work really well for practical jokes. Called the Ghost Reminder, this gadget features a motion sensor, a microphone and a speaker.

The premise is that one records a message and then when someone comes within three feet of the device (sensed via the motion sensor), the pre-recorded message automatically plays. Simple, yet the possibilities are endless. Put it beside the fridge to remind yourself that you’re on a diet. Put it next to the front door to remind hubby to take the garbage out. Hide it in the bushes and have an obscene rant play every time someone walks by.
