Fuel Cell Powered Cellular PhoneAt a recent tech trade show in Japan, KDDI Technologies exhibited several new products and services, including a fuel cell powered cellular phone that they expect to be available in April of 2006. From Ceatec’s Web Magazine:

KDDI has jointly developed cellular telephones powered by fuel cells with both Toshiba Corporation and Hitachi, Ltd. Samples of these models have been drawing many visitors to the KDDI booth. The main type of battery used in cellular telephones today is a lithium-ion battery, which is not ideal in terms of consumption rate or durability. Therefore, many are pinning their hopes on fuel cells, which become fully recharged the instant fuel is added.

The “cell” (battery) life is about double that of normal lithium ion batteries and extra juice is carried around in a pen-shaped device that holds 2 recharges.

No word on when or if the fuel cell powered phones will be available in North America, but whenever they are, I’d caution against smoking a cigarette while taking a call. The aluminum foil hat you wear to protect your brain from excessive radio signals may not be enough protection to guard you against a mishap.
