Xyron Design Runner hand held printerXyron recently released details of their new Design Runner hand held printer which kind of reminds me of the old style handheld scanners. Here’s a snip from their press release:

Using Lexmark print technology, this cordless, portable printer fits in the palm of a hand, giving consumers the ability to print directly on a variety of materials. With just the touch of a button it is now easier than ever before to print custom designs on fabric, wood, polymer clay, wallpaper and other surfaces. Consumers no longer need to purchase special printer adapters for odd-sized papers or use multi-step heat-based image transfer processes. The Xyron Design Runner also features a LCD display with a built-in guidance system for easy and accurate design selection and alignment.

The Xyron Design Runner will begin shipping in December 2005 with a suggested retail price of $139.99. This pricing includes the hand-held printer, a protective docking station, a complete 40-design sample Design Disc, one acid-free black inkjet cartridge, and two 9-volt batteries.

The idea of a hand-propelled printer could bring with it so many interesting possibilities that it’s a shame that this device appears to be limited strictly to pre-fab design discs. I know I’ll just have to buy a printer like this once more flexible models become available. At the very least, I would like to print from my computer (or pda/smartphone) as I would a regular printer, but a really impressive hand-propelled printer would be able to output documents with boundaries as large as my arm’s stamina and ink supply would allow.

You are very right! The lady at my scrapbook store said that she thinks later on they will be coming out with one that lets you put your own words in.
