Engadget and Unethical Blogging – set 2

March 21, 2006 | In: Breaking News, Internet

Since the previous post was getting very big, it’s better to keep it short and to the point, with more updated news.

Other interesting posts:

- Ryan Block, the person that made the image/source mistake that sparked all this, has posted his thoughts at his personal blog

- OhGizmo writes about the blacklist theory. Don’t know if it’s real..yet.

- GearLive also joins the party, and gives an example of a post “stolen” by Engadget and not giving a source link. They use a photo from gearlive, talk about gearlive, but there is no link love relation ship :(

- Searching a bit more, we could find out that this problem isn’t new. In 2005, GadgetMadness also had some problems, same issue basically. And Engadget also likes to receive the credit.

- MobilityToday is another one to add to the list of previous problems

On other news, the topic at digg.com got some interesting comments. User: Disillusioned comments here:

…This all came to a screeching awareness of the real matter at hand for me when I was in the CES Press Room and overheard the following:

Jason Calacanis: “Oh, just set up that link and post it.”
Engadget Writer: “Um… Peter [Rojas, editor of Engadget] doesn’t like us to directly link to competitor sites like that.”
Jason: *stunned silence, slowly acknowledges the situation*…
Jason: “Oh. Okay.”

jdawg , replies in the Digg comments:

Disillusioned: That dialog never occurred… although it does read like a movie script (stunned silence?!). There is no blacklist, that’s just plain silly. What would the point of that be?

Disillusioned, strikes again with a reply:

Jason: Of course *stunned silence* was meant to be cute. But if you want me to describe exactly where you were sitting (or standing over) or any other details, I’d be happy to.

I was just surprised, because it was so obviously not *your* policy.

And no more news about that. So, who is disillusioned, how can we know?

This also hit Fark

Is this a conspiracy theory? Or something more? I could make a novel out of this, a type of Web-melodrama like someone said on Fark Forums.
