New Ajax Commenting & Bookmarking Console at Gadgetizer.com

September 25, 2006 | In: General

I’ve just finished installing a new Ajaxified Commenting & Social Bookmarking Console (for lack of a better description) here at Gadgetizer and would like some feedback if you have time.

It’s impossible for me to test it out on all browser/OS combos, so if you’re using a Commodore 64 on an old BW TV, or a quad processor screamer running Linux and a 30″ monitor and find something freaky with that comment form, please let me know using the contact form here.

If you came to this post from a link or search engine, the snazzed up console is below. If you’re reading this on the main page or a category page, just click the “Comments” link on the right of the green bar below to go to the form.

Any bug reports would be hugely appreciated.

Head Geek, Paul Short.

NOTE: This new commenting system sets a new cookie in visitors browsers. Even though people may have commented and been approved earlier, they have to have another comment approved to post freely again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Things to do with this commenting/social bookmarking console:

* Rounded corners on the colored tabs to match the rest of the layout

* Style the tab heading text to make it look better

* Tiny icons next to the bookmarking and submit links

* Test for legacy browser compatibility

* Have others test in different OS/Browser version combos

* Smilies are working too: ;-) :-) :)

** Fix problem with the comment list pushing to the right in older versions of IE

Currently works in IE7, FF, Opera & Flock browsers on Windows XP.

Hi Anna, if your browser accepts cookies, post another quick comment and you’ll see the Ajax part working. ;-)

Hi Paul,
Sorry about using the contact instead of comments. Eyes aren’t as good as they used to be.
Anyways all looks good in the different browsers I mentioned in the email.

Hi Paul,

Hate to be the typo geek but I’m sure you’ll understand -

“Spam, blatent advertising, hateful or otherwise offensive comments will be deleted”

Blatent(no) Blatant(yes)

I’m using IE6 and it looks great on this end. Super cool! The eye is really drawn to the colored squares at the top right of the comment form – so I can see how this would really encourage visitors to take some sort of action on posts they enjoyed enough to read down that far…

Great job!

I assume you’ll be packaging something like this up as a nifty little plug-in at some point in the future?? ;) ;)

Best,
Lynn Terry

Loving the colors. Normally, I don’t go for such bright things, but it suits the site nicely and, as Lynn mentioned, definitely draws the eyes. :)

Great replacement for those hideous rows of bookmarking icons you find everywhere else!
