RedOwl – The Robot For War
January 18, 2007 | In: General, Robots Cyborgs

CNN is reporting on a cool robot made for war, it is called RedOwl and has some relations with current gaming systems – it is controlled by a modified version of an Xbox controller which gives more accurate and precise movements. Originally the main feature (mechanical ears) of the robot wasn’t related to the combat mode, but since its developer found a way to make it useful for soldiers there couldn’t be a turning back.
When the RedOwl hears gunfire, it swivels its head toward the source of the noise. A thermal imager can pick out the sniper while an infrared spotlight illuminates him for night-vision-equipped troops.
On top of the previously described feature, the RedOwl can also identify the make and model of a rifle fired a mile away simply by analyzing the sound of the distant blast, cool, huh? Glenn Thoren is hoping to see his creation to be used in Iraq during this year, each unit costs $150,000.
