Rumor has it that Nintendo is preparing the next generation of its insanely popular Wii console for 2011. Of course the logical next step for the console is to go HD - which is apparently the plan, but more interesting that that - the console may have ONLY digitally distributed content.
Think of the iPhone App Store for your Wii. Nintendo is already using this for WiiWare titles like Mega Man 9 - which is proving to be very successful, and profitable for game developers of all sizes.
This kind of distribution model is being considered by all the major gaming consoles, and it seems like a no-brainer to me. Simply expand the storage of the devices, and keep Wal-Mart and Target out of it. Give us cheaper games (and game rentals anyone?) and a store that never runs out of stock.
Of course, stores like GameStop would go completely out of business - but who cares? A Wii App Store would be AWESOME.
