Many are calling the “Android” powered G1 from T-Mobile the company’s answer to the “iPhone”. In some respects that may be true, but the two are vastly different systems, with completely different business models, styles, and implementations.

T-Mobile customers seem to be very interested in seeing what Google has to offer, however. The G1, which has just been recently made available for pre-order has already sold 1.5 million units. Now some will immediately compare that to the original launch of the iPhone - and declair the G1 the winner before its even been shipped. Unfortunately, that’s like comparing Apples to Apple Computers - it’s just not the same. The iPhone launched at $599, and the G1 is selling for $179.99 - it’s hard to compare those two equally.

If you want a more close comparison you can look at the iPhone 3G launch - which put the device at a much closer price point of $199. In that first weekend Apple sold over 1 million units.

So - bottom line is this - the G1 is off to a great start sales wise. Now the thing just has to deliver on a stable, easy to use OS.
