Shanghai Tower Construction & Development has chosen Mitsubishi Electric to accomplish an interesting and challenging mission, to create the world’s fastest elevators that will be installed at the currently under construction Shanghai Tower, located in the Pudong district of Shanghai, China.

The elevators would send its occupants up and down around 59 feet per second, which sounds like a challenge to not only create this level of architecture and engineering but also to do it any not have the walls covered in vomit after.

Mitsubishi Electric will have to compete with the current world’s fastest elevator speed of 55.12 feet per second in order to claim the title of world’s fastest and from what we know of the company, they’re up for this challenge. Mitsubishi will be supplying106 elevators for the 632-meter tall skyscraper complex which will hopefully still see a 2014 completion date.

In case you didn’t notice, Gadgetizer is part of the Bloggy Network, and the good news is that the big folks have launched a new network dedicated to local blogging:

As such, Bloggy Network is very proud to launch a new mini-network centered around local cities called ‘is My Home‘. We have started out in nine cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Memphis, Nashville, and Philadelphia.

Each is My Home blog is tailored to your city – this ain’t no cookie-cutter content. Our bloggers will be poring over their cities, making sure you know what is going on. If you are looking for a great wealth of local information, and haven’t found what you are looking for, our blogs are a great place to start.

I really like the domain name idea that in the end results in something that you can read, such as: Columbus is My Home, or Houston is My home, etc…

Props to David for the good job, and if you are interested in contributing to the project, keep on reading:

We are looking for more bloggers to talk about their city (US only at this time). Feel free to contact me at local@bloggynetwork.com.

There is a new program called “Text a Tip” that is suppose to fight the crime in the Boston area. It uses the “modern” technology of text messages (SMS) on cellphones and as strange as it might sound – it is an anonymous tip.

How does it work:

In the new system, people with information about crimes would type the word “tip” into their phones and send the message to police. The sender’s identification is blocked, Davis said. Police will then “text” a message back asking for details.

When taking in consideration the other ways to tip the police about crimes, I’d say this is probably the best one. People always have a cellphone with them so that won’t be a problem, however, if you don’t have credit to send a SMS it can be a dramatic situation.

It is not any burger that can be paid via your mobile phone, only in McDonalds.

You can’t do this innovative action of buying food without real money everywhere, only in Japan.

According to BBC this new system will be implemented in the near future and the fortunate Japanese mobile phone operator that will work in coordination with McDonals is the popular Docomo.

I bet it is a good feeling of entering McDonalds and taking the cellphone out of the pocket to get a Cheese Burger, if only this new system was available elsewhere besides the Asian market…

Julie Ask, analyst of Jupiter (a company, not the planet) comments:

It gives both McDonald’s and DoCoMo the opportunity to track consumers and their eating habits. Cash is more likely to be used in small transactions. Electronic payments will allow user behaviour to be tracked and used for marketing purposes.

With that in mind, the results are clarifying that Nintendo DS wins the battle against other products and companies like Sony and Microsoft, check the results of number of units sold during (un)specific date ranges, probably 1 week:

Nintendo DS – 146,073

Nintendo Wii – 65,700

Playstation 3 – 18,700

Xbox360 – 6,130

You can start saying goodbye to the very old-school floppy disks that cheered up your days during the 90’s. One of the biggest computer related stores – PC World – said that it will no longer sell the storage devices, affectionately known as floppies, once existing stock runs out.

I remember using the floppy disks a lot when I started using computers, like:

saving word documents full of crap

playing games – installing the games was so easier at that time, some even had more than 1 floppy disk as installation drives

installing windows 95 using 20 (or more) floppy disks

I don’t know many people that still use floppies at this time, at least in developed countries, but I bet that in African countries and other less-developed places that is still the way to go. Sadly, the popular disk can only store 1.44megabytes of data which is nothing at this time of the century, I can’t imagine the patience some people have to use it…

The sound of a computer’s floppy disk drive will be as closely associated with 20th Century computing as the sound of a computer dialing into the internet.

Samsung and Google have signed a deal to make the internet company products available to Samsung mobile phones, so starting sometime this year there will be certain Samsung phones with access to services such as: easy access (one-click) to Google Search; implementation of Google Maps in mobile devices; and finally the most respected access to Gmail.

While Samsung has already presented the SGH-Z720 which was their first mobile phone with access to Google Search and the Gmail service, you can expect a couple more devices on the near future with the same features.

Kitae Lee from Samsung, comments:

Our cooperation with Google exemplifies our commitment to leading the evolution from the fixed-Internet era to a mobile Internet era and ushering in a ubiquitous world where mobile enables our consumers to access information about anything, anywhere, anytime.

The NYTimes reports that a new feature on Kodak digital cameras will probably be implemented later this year, it is related with the glow eyes that appear in most animal photos.

In case you didn’t know “animal eyes have a reflective structure not found in human eyes” so that is why animal photos end up with bad quality (eyes) most of the times, and since animals are one of the top targets for photos that is why Kodak wants to be the first one coming up with the new system and gain the popularity among photographers.

This upcoming feature can be compared to the actual red-eye removal (for humans) that current digi cams already have. Of course that Photoshop and other image editing programs can remove the glowing eyes from animal photos…
