Hilariously, according to the manual as it were, World of Warcraft isn’t even compatible with Linux, despite good support for it under WINE. Also, the idea of Windows Live Essentials as being a “free download” is a bit of hogwash we call know, especially since Linux has offered a slew of alternatives to the Windows Live Essentials.

All in all, we are yet again pretty disappointed by Microsoft. Shame, shame.

The LimePC is going to be presented at CES 2008, and taking in consideration its small size and features, I’d say it is probably (76%) going to be a hit.

So far there aren’t plenty of details, but the UMPC is:

What more can you ask? Alarm clock? Check. Ethernet Port in case there isn’t WiFi? Check.

It is time to replace the old-school alarm clock for something cool and useful, the MusicPal that costs $139.

So, you want to buy a gadget be it a laptop, notebook, mobile phone or PDA, but you have one important requirement which is a must-have Linux preinstalled.

It isn’t an easy task to go search for a store that has devices with Linux as the main Operative System installed, but there is a website that can help you out by listing all of the places/devices/websites with the previously mentioned characteristics.

Thanks to TuxMobil you can know which vendor operates in which region, and also what Linux gadgets they are able to provide. For example, as of right now and not knowing if that info table is accurate or not, there are only 3 companies that sell mobile phones preinstalled with Linux, those being Vesat, M-Circle and eXpansys.

To keep up with the robotic trend from yesterday, I would like to present yet another robot which is not so good as Spyke but still worth a mention. This one has a more original name – Wow Wee – and strangely enough, it comes with a Linux OS and the creators consider it a “Multimedia Robotic Experience”.

On the technical details, there is:

a small 1.9-inch LCD screen located on the front (chest) of the robot

one speaker placed on each hand with a 11watts of power

camera with motion tracking

compatible with the old USB1.1 interface

40MB of internal flash memory with an option to upgrade to 1GB thanks to the SD card slot

2 microphones

MP3 Player + camera

I’ve been using Skype on my Win PC for well over a year. It’s great for communicating with friends and business associates, for free, no long distance charges as long as the other party has it installed on their computer too.

So now they’ve improved and released their Linux version. Coincidence – I was playing around with a Linux laptop at a local computer store a few days ago and wondered how compatible it would be with the VOIP and IM apps I regularly use.

Here’s a snip from the official announcement:

We have finally put up the latest and the greatest and public and 1.3.

Named Skype for Linux 1.3.0.53 it sports an impressive change log with a lot of visual, usability and sound quality improvements.

There are still some audio problems (for some users, especially those on Ubuntu 6.06), and we will try to address them in further versions.

So, all you penguin hugging Skype junkies, can download Skype for Linux here.

Linux Counter is a project that aims to get a number of Linux users in the world, it started back on 1993 and the person in charge is Harald Alvestrand.

There can’t be an exact number of Linux users, so the latest guess (made on march 2005) is about 29 million, showing signs of growth from that time to today… If you’re a user of this operative system and not registered at the Linux Counter, go ahead and complete the simple form for submission.

A second purpose of the Linux Counter is to make it possible for Linux users to find each other. The Linux Counter is reporting Linux users sorted per almost any place in the world.
