You can now download Symbian’s code without a penny, though we know how you feel about this sorta aged platform and we feel you on that for sure.

We think people have their sights more on the iPhone and Android OS more than Symbian, but the more the merrier we suppose.

Songbird is a cool combination of: Desktop Media Player + Digital Jukebox + Web Browser.

It’s an open source project that uses Mozilla as the base and it has plenty of good features when comparing to other media players, like:

• being able to play songs when visiting a website – if there is an audio file on a site, songbird will play it just like a normal song
• save the song from a website to a personal playlist by using the simple “drag-and-drop” system
• built-in search box to find music – there are plenty of search engines available
• cross-platform – run it on windows, mac or linux
• easily create new skins for the player, or feathers as they like to call it

Songbird v0.2 was released a few days ago but sadly it seems that the setup file is not available at the moment.

You can download the Windows release candidate of Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 directly, along with Mac and Linux versions, but beware. phpBB, one of the most famous (and free) forum systems has been upgraded to version 3. It’s still on beta stage, phase 1, so bugs are something to expect. Lets just hope there aren’t many security issues…

Elephants Dream, the first Open Movie project which was made using Open Source Software (like GIMP, Twisted, Subversion, and Blender) was put online, available for download on the 18th of May.

The results arrived recently and are pretty satisfactory, half a million downloads in 2 weeks. Before the internet version, the movie was released on DVD, hitting the two thousand mark on the second week of May.

The short film was created by the Orange Open Movie Project studio in Amsterdam during 2005/2006, bringing together a diverse team of artists and developers from all over the world

Nokia made an announcement earlier today about the Web Browser for S60, the code for this application is now Open Source and available to the public via BSD License.

Catch the source code at WebKit or find more information about this project on the Nokia S60 OpenSouce site.

Heikki Heinaro, the man behind S60 applications, comments:

Nokia is pleased to deliver its mobility enhancements to the S60 browser engine and excited that developers will be collaborating through Webkit with the open source community on real-time evolution of the browser core code

The questions is: can the open source community improve the browser? Of course, it’s just a matter of waiting.

In March 2006, Firefox was the browser of choice used by 10% of the web population. This percentage is slowly growing, and Firefox is stealing users from the giant Microsoft browser – Internet Explorer.

1. Internet Explorer – 84,7%
2. Firefox – 10,05%
3. Safari – 3,19% (for Macs only)
